A number of chainsaws are available with different length and width bars, so it is important to identify which is the correct chain for your chainsaw.

1. If you know the manufacturer brand, model number and bar length.

In the seach bar enter the brand of your chainsaw and bar length, for example 'JCB 40cm chainsaw chain'. This search will bring up results suitable for a JCB 40cm chainsaw chain.

2. Accurately measure the LENGTH, PITCH, GAUGE and NUMBER of DRIVE links of your existing chain.

How to measure the Bar Length

A chainsaw bar's cutting length is different from its overall length. The cutting lenngth is the distance from the front of the saw to the tip of the bar including the chain, rounded to the nearest inch. This cutting length is used in the selector guide to describe the bars that are available for your saw.

Note: A number of chainsaws are available with different length and width bars, so it is important to check which bar is fitted.

How to measure the Chain Pitch

The pitch of the chain is the distance between any three consective rivits of the chain divided by two. The most common pitches are 3/8" or 0.325mm.

Note: This is important because the pitch of the chain must exactly match the pitch of the drive sprocket.

How to measure the Chain Gauge

The gauge of the chain is the thickness of the drive link where it  fits into the groove of the bar. The gauge of the chain and the gauge of the bar must match. The are a range of chainsaw chains with a gauge of 0.043" (1.1mm), 0.050" (1.3mm) and 0.058" (1.5mm).

Note: It can be difficult to accuratly measure the gauge on a worn chain.

How to count the number of Drive Links

To determine the length of your chain, count the number of drive teeth on the INSIDE of your old chain.

3. Match your old chain using the images below to identify the correct chain type, then count the number of Drive Links.

Type 1

Chain Pitch 3/8" Low Profile   Chain Gauge 0.043" (1.1mm)

If your chain has:

33 Links = BC033    40 Links = BC040    45 Links = BC045    50 Links = BC050    52 Links = BC052    56 Links = BC056    57 Links = BC057

Type 2

Chain Pitch 3/8" Low Profile   Chain Gauge 0.050" (1.3mm)

If your chain has:

33 Links = CH033    40 Links = CH040    44 Links = CH044    45 Links = CH045    49 Links = CH049    50 Links = CH050    52 Links = CH052    53 Links = CH053    55 Links = CH055    56 Links = CH056    57 Links = CH057    60 Links = CH060    61 Links = CH061    62 Links = CH062    63 Links = CH063

Type 3

Chain Pitch 0.325mm Semi Chisel   Chain Gauge 0.050" (1.3mm)

If your chain has:

64 Links = CH064    66 Links = CH066    72 Links = CH072     78 Links = CH078

Type 4

Chain Pitch 0.325mm Semi Chisel   Chain Gauge 0.058" (1.5mm)

If your chain has:

64 Links = CH466    72 Links = CH472    78 Links = CH478
